Report from NECAT-Sarah Conrad Weisman and others

NECAT analyzed the 2008 NOVELNY survey results and current NOVELNY content as part of their review prior to making database recommendations for "2009/10." They established subject priorities and then looked at databases within those topics. The NYSL engaged the help of Nylink in identifying possible products.

Based on feedback from NECAT and conversations among NYSL staff, a final list of vendors and products will be available within the next two weeks. This will be followed by a period of time to hammer out the fine details with the vendor; e.g., statistics, training. The NYSL hopes to have information to the field by the end of January. Any changes to the database suite will be announced via NYLINE messages. Library Development web pages and novelnewyork.org will be updated. .

Executive Budget Proposal-Loretta Ebert/Michael Borges

The Executive Budget proposal includes a big cut in library aid. NYSL staff and NYLA continue to work to make the case for restoration of funds. In a Regents meeting this week, the Cultural Education Committee discussed recommendations for increases to the legal transaction fees that fund Cultural Education. These have been reduced due to lower real estate transactions compared to previous years.

Mr. Borges noted that the $18 million cut in categorical aid to libraries puts us back to 1993 levels of funding. He is in ongoing discussions with legislators and legislative staff to document that library usage is up and people are using libraries more than ever, particularly to seek employment. A survey will be posted on the NYLA website, www.nyla.org, for library directors to detail how many patrons they helped to look for a job or access job assistance.

Note: NYLA Lobby Day is Tuesday, March 10, 2009 in Albany.

Report from NOVELNY Success Stories Group-Sue Bartle

Ms. Bartle met with BOCES technology people and has been given permission to post a section on the School Library web site, with full rights to write and edit pieces, mount blogs and videos (with option to comment-"Voice Threads"), etc. She will provide the URL to Steering Committee members. Send comments on NOVELNY success stories to sbartle@e2ccb.org.

Ms. McRae will determine whether there are any NOVELNY success stories in New York City's schools which can be documented and shared with Ms. Bartle.

Other:

Ms. Bartle expressed her thanks to Ms. Krupczak for working with NECAT on the database selection. In turn, Ms. Krupczak thanked NECAT for their thoughtful, diligent, persevering work, often in a short time frame. Ms. Ebert added that another change this year was involving Nylink in the process to facilitate the evaluation process and deal with vendors, and they, too, should be recognized and thanked for their contributions.
