Conversation with Regents Advisory Council (RAC) representative

Ms. Conrad Weisman introduced Ms. Bridget Quinn-Carey from the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries. Ms. Quinn-Carey is chair of the Council. She discussed the Council's process in gathering input toward the creation of a 2020 Vision for Library Services in New York document. She encouraged both a collective response from the Steering Committee and individual replies. Ms. Quinn Carey's remarks were cut short due to technical difficulties. Ms. Desch was able to confirm the details of the process and referred the Committee to the RAC website for additional detail.

Ms. Conrad Weisman will post a Google document for Steering Committee members to use in drafting a NOVELny Steering Committee response to the RAC questions. The Committee will endeavor to complete a reply by the April 20 deadline.

2011-12 NOVELny Database procurement

State Library staff are awaiting one final document to complete the procurement process. There will be an announcement to the field as soon as possible after procurement is complete. The Committee requested staff to ask vendors for prompt disclosure if content moves off or onto existing products.

Ms. Ebert will convey that message to the vendors.

2012-13 Database Evaluation and Recommendation Process

Ms. Conrad Weisman led a committee discussion of the process to arrive at recommendations for 2012-13 content. The group has already begun use of a Google doc to exchange concerns and information.

  • The group will begin to identify a priority list of content areas and then move to identifying products that could best meet each area. Possible use of sub-groups to investigate each content area.
  • Choltco-Devlin and Elliott will explore whether/how a patron survey could be deployed.
  • Ryan-Linder will provide the group will results of the survey undertaken last year.
  • State Library staff will supply a previously developed core list of regional newspaper titles for committee review.
  • State Library staff will supply statistics on product use for the period 1 July 2010 - 30 April 2011 sometime in May.

Statewide Internet Library Levels (formerly NOVEL-Ready levels Table)

Mr. Fiske and Mr. Santangelo reviewed the latest revision to the NOVEL-Ready Levels Table, which has been renamed Statewide Internet Library Levels. Bandwidth measures indicate capacity at the workstation. Mobile applications are recognized.

The committee will send any comments/suggestions on the revised table to Dave Fiske by April 18. The table will then be posted to the Library Development web page and comment solicited from the field.

Congratulations to Mr. Santangelo on being named an LJ Mover and Shaker.

Meeting adjourned at 11:35am.
